Forney Transportation Museum, Denver CO

Once again, I blogged backwards, but oh well. Here at the end of our little adventure of the Forney Transportation Museum, Mr. J is chillin' in the back of a Ford Model T.

How often does on get the opportunity to sit in a Model T! I don't think they realized the unique opportunity they had, but it was quite fun to pretend to drive any sort of car.

One of the favorites was this Governess' cart. Of which all the kids were wishing that we could have one so that they could take a ride. It was for the Governess' to pull and take their charges out for a ride at the park. Sort of like a hand cart. It would be loads of fun if I wasn't the one who had to pull it. Good exercise though.

This particular wagon reminded me of the movie/play Oklahoma... Lets go out and ride on my surry... with the fringe on TOP!

Curly:

When I take you out, tonight, with me,
Honey, here's the way it's goin' to be:
You will set behind a team of snow white horses,
In the slickest gig you ever see!

Chicks and ducks and geese better scurry
When I take you out in the surrey,
When I take you out in the surrey with the fringe on top!
Watch that fringe and see how it flutters
When I drive them high steppin' strutters.
Nosey pokes'll peek thru' their shutters and their eyes will pop!
The wheels are yeller, the upholstery's brown,
The dashboard's genuine leather,
With isinglass curtains y' can roll right down,
In case there's a change in the weather.
Two bright sidelight's winkin' and blinkin',
Ain't no finer rig I'm a-thinkin'
You c'n keep your rig if you're thinkin' 'at I'd keer to swap
Fer that shiny, little surrey with the fringe on the top!

Aunt Eller:

Would y' say the fringe was made a' silk?

Curly:

Wouldn't have n' other kind but silk.

Laurey:

Has it really got a team of snow white horses?

Curly:

One's like snow,
the others more like milk.

All the world'll fly in a flurry
When I take you out in the surrey,
When I take you out in the surrey with the fringe on top!
When we hit that road, hell fer leather,
Cats and dogs'll dance in the heather,
Birds and frogs'll sing all together and the toads will hop!
The wind'll whistle as we rattle along,
The cows'll moo in the clover,
The river will ripple out a whispered song,
And whisper it over and over:
Don't you wisht y'd go on forever?
Don't you wisht y'd go on forever?
Don't you wisht y'd go on forever and ud never stop
In that shiny, little surrey with the fringe on the top!

I can see the stars gettin' blurry,
When we ride back home in the surrey,
Ridin' slowly home in the surrey with the fringe on top!
I can feel the day gettin' older,
Feel a sleepy head near my shoulder,
Noddin', droopin' close to my shoulder, till it falls kerplop!
The sun is swimmin' on the rim of a hill;
The moon is takin' a header,
And jist as I'm thinkin' all the earth is still,
A lark'll wake up in the medder.
Hush, you bird, my baby's a-sleepin'!
Maybe got a dream worth a-keepin'
Whoa! you team, and jist keep a-creepin' at a slow clip clop.
Don't you hurry with the surrey with the fringe on the top!

Oh my... if that wasn't a musical moment, I don't know what. I just felt like bursting into song. I think that might be a fun movie for movie night tonight!!! The kids have never seen it.

Did you know that Wilbur and Orville Wright had a bike shop? I didn't but, Mr. A did as he has been studying them among other early aviators. He got a kick out of seeing them. And learning a little more about them.

The kids had to marvel at this above bike. I wonder if they make any modern replicas of them. Wouldn't that be interesting to try out? Well that and a unicycle.

Another highlight was getting behind the wheel of a JEEP! The kid's favorite car of all time. Every one of them wants to buy a Jeep when they are all grown up. It will be interesting to see who actually does. I wouldn't put it past Mr. A for sure. Every time we see a Jeep when we are driving around, the call out JEEP CHECK!!!! Sort of our own version of "slug bug!"
Who knew Denver used to have trolleys?
This one can be rented for parties. That would be cool.

Of course, the trains were a huge highlight. Union Pacific to boot! A Union Pacific BIG BOY! And Mr. S was actually intimidated by the shear size of them. He was very hesitant to get on one.

While this did catch the size of this snow plow, it did do well to catch the funny picture on it.
It was ginormous, at least 10' X 10'.

Trains are sure special in this family. And it was a treat to explore some.

The hole is the fire box. The tender on this rig was ginormous too.

Mr. A said this was his favorite. Amelia Earhart's "Yellow Peril." Funny how the "Yellow Peril" reminds me of another musical.... Summer Magic. Except the yellow peril wasn't a car in that one. The little sign said that Amelia drove her car the same way she flew a plane, fast and reckless. Would you want to sit on that little seat sticking out of the car while she drove? Andrew has been fascinated with her.

Here is to an "uppity woman." May she rest in peace!

Thank you Grandma!!! We had a great time.
